I’d hiked lots of trails in Mount Seymour Provincial Park but I’d never made it all the way to the summit of Mount Seymour itself. I decided to finally summit the highest peak in the park during some amazing October weather.

Most people here in the Pacific Northwest are in agreement about one important thing – our autumn weather has been fantastic! October was especially amazing and I took full advantage to check some hikes off of my list. First up – Frosty Mountain in Manning Provincial Park.

Glacier-carved valleys, soaring peaks, ancient volcanoes and ice fields. Just a taste of what I encountered following the Opal Cone trail beyond Elfin Lakes in Garibaldi Provincial Park.

A lot of trails near Vancouver are very popular. A lot of them are Instagram famous. Some of these trails are good to do once. Experience it, enjoy it, and then find the less beaten path. Elfin Lakes is worthy of the hype and fame. However those who only visit for a day are missing out on the real wonder of this place.

My first backpacking trip this year revealed that I’m not in the same shape I was last year by this time, mentally or physically. Read on to find out what I learned from this shakedown hike.

The last full weekend of October, I had the pleasure of being in Whistler. The weather was beautiful: cool, crisp and sunny. Seeing as I would be there for a few days, I had to take advantage of some free time and get a few hikes in!

I had only been home from the PCT for about a week before I started thinking about what we could do for Labour Day weekend. I got the all clear from my physio to hike again and chose the Heather Trail in the north end of Manning Provincial Park. We could drive up to about 6000 feet and start the trail in subalpine meadows. We’d keep our mileage low and take it easy on the trail.

The Elfin Lakes hike has been on my bucket list for a few years. It is a well-known and very popular overnight trip near Vancouver. The winter has been a long one in Vancouver but I finally bit the bullet and reserved a Friday night at the shelter, with the forecast promising a mix of sun and clouds. It would do.

Yesterday was the first day of spring and the forecast was for sunshine! I decided to head for the North Shore mountains and do a trail that I try to do every winter: Mount Seymour summit in Mount Seymour Provincial Park.

This week a callout came through the Wanderung Group for a hike into Manning Park, a provincial park about 2 hours east of Vancouver. I replied to the email right away and offered up my chauffeur services. I was headed to Manning Park, and more specifically to Windy Joe Lookout!
